Securaplane FacilityFounded in 1986, Securaplane was the pioneer of security systems for aircrafts and has remained the world leader in these systems since. Hundreds of operators have come to trust Securaplane with the security of their aircraft. Securaplane systems are installed on the aircraft of heads of state, CEOs, and VIP aircraft of many of the most profitable companies in the world.

Securaplane was acquired by Danaher Corp. in 2000 and incorporated best practices in lean manufacturing and lean enterprise through the application of Danaher business system. The foundational elements and processes related to lean are an essential component of Securaplane’s success in driving customer satisfaction and competitive advantage.

In April 2011, Securaplane was acquired by Meggitt PLC as part of a broader acquisition of Pacific Scientific Aerospace. Headquartered in the United Kingdom, Meggitt PLC is an international group operating in North America, Europe, and Asia. Known for its specialized extreme environment engineering, Meggitt is a world leader in aerospace, defense and energy markets. The Pacific Scientific Aerospace acquisition added capabilities in electrical power generation, linear motion control, safety, security, and associated repair and overhaul services to Meggitt.

A tradition of innovation

Headquartered in Tucson, AZ, Securaplane specializes in energy storage, power electronics, airborne cameras, aircraft security systems and wireless control systems. Through the various generations of these products, Securaplane has continuously demonstrated its ability to bring innovation to the commercial aerospace industry. Many of the products and product features qualified and certified by Securaplane represent new-to-industry innovations. Examples include:

Wireless smoke: In response to customer desire to be able to retrofit smoke detection in the cargo area, Securaplane developed wireless smoke detection system, the first application of wireless controls for essential systems certified by FAA.

Wireless emergency lighting system (WELS): In order to provide weight reduction, greater installation flexibility, and improved maintainability, Securaplane developed the wireless emergency lighting system for the Boeing 787.  Fully approved by FAA, FCC, and FCC-equivalent organizations in various countries, WELS is the first product of its kind installed by an airframe OEM in their production line.

Lithium batteries: Through its expertise in power electronics and experience in energy storage, Securaplane has developed a unique architecture for lithium batteries, both for mainship applications as well as emergency backup applications. Integrating all electronics into the battery offers unique benefits in terms of power/energy performance, long-life reliability, and safety.

More electric aircraft: In support of the industry trend towards a more electric architecture, Securaplane has developed battery chargers, inverters, and cycloconverters that meet the most stringent requirements and performance characteristics. Incorporating new technologies such as Vienna rectifiers, power MOSFETs/IGBTs, planar transformers, ultracapacitors, and advanced PWM (pulse width modulation) techniques, etc. has enabled Securaplane to meet ever more stringent requirements from its customers.

Security system: Securaplane was the first company to offer a fully-integrated aircraft security system that integrated detection, alarm, video and video recording, and telecommunication into one seamless package. The innovation has continued with the latest offering (PreFlite) that incorporates the convenience of GSM mobile communications and improved detection using impulse radar technology for improved peace-of-mind to our customers.

Lean enterprise and quality

With an eye on customer satisfaction and competitive advantage, Securaplane has fully adopted the culture of waste reduction and continuous improvement that comes with lean manufacturing and lean enterprise. Some examples of lean enterprise in play at Securaplane include:

  • Kanbans (pull system re-ordering) to ensure product availability – on-time every time!
  • Standard work and poke-yokes (error-proofing) to ensure quality at the source.
  • Gemba walks (accountability at the point of impact) to ensure process discipline to meet customer requirements.
  • Hoshin kanri (organization alignment towards a strategic goal) to ensure that resources are applied to the vital few that truly impact our customers.

In the spirit of continuous improvement, the lean journey never ends…but we are always ready for the next challenge!

In compliance with the requirements of the aerospace industry, Securaplane is AS9100 and ISO 9001 certified. More recently, in 2012 Securaplane has been certified to the most recent revision (Rev C) of AS9100.
